TCR No 11 – pre-race blog

Were’ almost ready to go – train to Exeter tomorrow and then ferry on Wednesday to Santander.

We’re doing the transcontinental – specifically TCR no11. We’re racing from Santiago de Compostela, Spain to Constanta, Romania. My route is about 4,700km, with an epic 59,000m of climbing. We have to cover about 257km per day to meet the time cut-offs, but even if we slip behind that we’ll push on and see how far we can get in the 18 and bit days of the race.

Rob and I are competing as a pair, in this self-supported race. We can use anything commercially available, so our strategy is to sleep in hotels, so that means we are not carrying tents and sleeping mats. We do have emergency sleeping bags and clothing for cold weather up on the mountain passes, but otherwise we are travelling quite light.

Training

So training has been a bit hit and miss. We’ve had a two multi-day trips which were successful – a trip to Devon in February where we covered 500km and then a European trip where we did 700km. But these distances were a bit short of where we needed to be. We did a 212km gravel epic last week to make sure we can do that sort of distance and it was hard, but it did have over 100km of gravel which is more than we’ll have on any day on the TCR, but the elevation was a bit lower, so I guess we’ll see if our training is any good. We could certainly have done with more, but weddings and beer festivals and fun generally got in the way. Our current plan is to train into it on the event. Wish us luck!
