Whixley Phoenix Long Route 2025!

Phoenix riding a bike

After a nice relatively flat warm-up of 30k through country roads.

You’ll start climbing with the Crayke climb, then onto Oulston bank to get the legs working in the Howardian Hills. Then turning right at Coxwold, your tour around three abbeys, beautiful Byland Abbey.

Before crossing into the North York Moors National Park. Then a tough climb from Ampleforth (the abbey is there somewhere) up Becon Bank, with sections at 12% but you are rewarded with amazing 360 views at the top. Before a steep descending into Hemsley.

Then a gentle climb up before turning off and descending down to Rievaulx Abbey, which is beautiful. The descent is -16% so take it steady.

Then the biggest climb of the ride starts, you’ll ascend over 200m which is a pretty big climb for the UK right up to the top of the moors through Scawton. It will be a tough climb with sections at 16%. Then you’ll find yourself above the White Horse, descending down the hairpin bends which max out at -25% so please be very careful.

Then the final climb in the Howardian Hills is through Husthwaite.

Then you are safely back on flatter roads, with 40k to ride back to Whixley.

The route is 123km with 1300m of climbing. Maybe biggest ever ride, with the biggest ever climb!

The feed stations are expected to be in Helperby – 18km and 100km and Coxwold – 40km and 73km and then back to Whixley at 123km.
